  • All returns accepted: Returns Accepted
  • Condition: The strip was mis-cut (as made) in the factory. With this example the names appear under the portraits. Only parts of the dates appear below the names. Also, in addition to the partial dates under the portraits the full dates appear on the top border over the portraits. This strip was mis-cut in the factory from a sheet of 100 cards. There is a 1 1/4 inch tear coming in from the bottom border on the Lincoln card & a 5/8 inch tear coming in on the bottom & a minute chip by the tear on the Jackson card. There is a small chip off of the bottom right hand corner of the Washington card. There is a scratch on Jefferson's face. The group we are offering has some even brown toning from age. In addition to the five cards on the strip there is a fragment of a William McKinley card on the left end of the strip which has major chipping & losses on the left side & is only about 1/2 present. We have not counted the McKinley in our five card strip count.

    Description

1921 W-563 original uncut strip of five W-series presidential strip cards including Washington, Lincoln, & Grant. Often this type of W-series strip card is individually found in very bad condition (such as out of registration, printed off center, badly faded, badly worn & or damaged, etc., etc.). This series has been identified as having been made by The Universal Toy And Novelty Mfg. Co. in 1921.
All of the other cards in this presidential part of the series were issued with two years under their names including first year that they were in office to the last year that they served in office. The only exception in the series was Harding who just had the date of 1921 under his name. So, it becomes obvious that this series dates from 1921. It is very pleasing to offer this uncut strip of five from the series. The strip measures 8 9/16 inches long by 2 9/16 inches tall.
The cards have some natural toning from age. The colors are all in superb registration on the cards. A line with the names of the presidents was originally printed under the images just below the frames of their portraits. Then under the name line the dates of when each of the men was president were printed. In the case of this strip of the five presidents, which we are offering in this listing, the strip was mis-cut (as made) in the factory. With this example the names appear under the portraits. But, only parts of the dates appear below the names. Also, in addition to the partial dates under the portraits the full dates appear on the top border over the portraits.
This strip was mis-cut in the factory from a sheet of 100 cards. The strip that was on top of this strip on the sheet had the same varieties of presidential cards. This occurrence created a rare variation in this very interesting, & entertaining factory error (as made) & shown in this offering. The text line at the tops of these cards is from a strip of cards that was on the sheet above this strip. The strip of cards above this presidential strip, in this instance, would have also been a strip of presidential cards.
There are no creases, no folds, no repairs, & no fading of the colors. The group we are offering has some even brown toning from age. In addition to the five cards on the strip there is a fragment of a William McKinley card on the left end of the strip which has major chipping & losses on the left side & is only about 1/2 present. We have not counted the McKinley in our five card strip count. This all original 1921 group of five uncut strip cards has not been tampered with in any way. This strip turned up approximately 25 years ago intact as shown right out of the original confectionary store where it had been sitting untampered with & packed away & unexposed to light since 1921. It has been sequestered in our collection ever since that time.
Here is a list of the cards on the strip from right to left starting with the earliest president first. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, Abe Lincoln, U.S. Grant, + an  incomplete William McKinley (not counted in our five card count). It is interesting to note that the portrait of George Washington was inspired by the famous unfinished oil painting of George Washington which was done (or should we more accurately say almost done?) by Gilbert Stuart.
A fascinating historic item now a full century old, ready to travel, after these 25 years or so that we have owned & enjoyed it, to another happy home.
