    Description

Offered here is a unique 1932 nine page handwritten letter from a member of a church in Brooklet Georgia - J. Walter Hendrix, to B. C. McElveen regarding an adultery case that was under discussion by the church association.
The letter is handwritten and signed in pencil and measures 5" X 8" folded out and 2 3/4" X 5" folded.
    It reads:
    1932
    Mr. B.C. McElveen
    Brooklet Ga
    Dear Bro. McElveen,
I have your kind letter relative to the Sills case and the probability of it coming up for discussion at the approaching session of our association to be held at Lands Church, Tues., Wed. and Thursday before the 2
    nd
    Sunday in Oct.
My contention is that Eld. Sills is in gross disorder by reason of a second marriage, when he had no Bible grounds to put away his former wife, he could not marry again during the lifetime of his former wife without entering into a state of adultry (sic).
I am not to blame for the facts attending upon his seperation (sic) from his former wife and certainly ought not to be blamed if the Bible says he is living in adultry(sic) on account of his recent marriage.
Now believing as I do I can not sit down with him or any other person or persons that hold him innocent and endorse him in his present position  and take counsel with them in any associational capacity (sic).
If Upper Black Creek sends messengers to the association I shall object with all the power of my soul to them being seated for I regard the church in the same disorder as Eld. Sills since her attempt to vindication of him, further more if any other church shall send messengers to the association with an endorsement of Eld. Sills or Upper Black Creek Church as they now stand I shall object to their being seated..
I do not know how much influence I may have in the association, nor do I definitely know what will happen when the Association convenes if indeed it does convene but I can ssure (sic) you that I will endeavor to maintain my convictions about this case, God being my helper, and that I will not surrender unless overwhelmed, and then if I remain in the association it would be to enter my solemn protest at every opportunity.
I happen to know if they don’t change their minds, that all the pastors in the association except Ed. Sills and Sims will endeavor to maintain the same position with me..
Our people have generally been a unit in such cases  as this one, and I want them to stand true to the Bible and established rule of our people.
I shall pray earnestly for same, if this is not right please show me what is.
If you brethren at Lanes  are not willing to stand for thruth (sic) and righteousness in the kingdom of Jesus Christ, If you are not willing to face this case as true Soldiers of Jesus Christ, it is my opinion that you will have to suffer more for cowardice and neglect of duty, than you will if you meet the issue face to face like men to help to settle the matter according to the word of God.
If you Brethren at Lanes don’t want the Sills matter to come up in the association suppose you use your good officers to keep Black Creek Church from representing in the association, they might not hear you  but you could try them.
If messengers come from Black Creek and are seated in the association and nothing is said by way of protest it would be considered by Upper Black Creek  and all others as a vindication  of their position.
I just can not consent to any such procedure and I hope you will not.
I trust that I have made myself clear and you will believe me honest and sincere in this matter with me but purely a matter of what is right of God.
    Yours in the dear Lord.
    J. Walter Hendrix
