    Description

Douglas DC-4 Facts Regarding The World's Largest Commercial Land Plane
    Author:
    DOUGLAS AIRCRAFT DC-4E PROMOTIONAL BROCHURE)
    Title:
Douglas DC-4 Facts Regarding The World's Largest Commercial Land Plane
    Publication:
Santa Monica, California. Douglas Aircraft Co., No date. Ca. 1938
    Description:
Pamphlet 9 x 4 inches opening to three double-sided panels with descriptive text relating to the aircraft the DC4-E, a prototype never followed through with. Brochure folded horizontally at middle - not as issued, otherwise good condition. Small illustration in open brochure provides cut-away view of the plane's interior. Text states "Main cabin 41 ft. long by 10 ft. 9 in. wide by 7 ft. 6 in. high. Forty lounge chairs are installed in pairs on each side of the center aisle. These make up into single or double beds. Sleeping accommodations for 32 passengers are provided, 12 in comfortable upper births. All births...have individual windows." Modifications to this design saw a single tail replacing the unsatisfactory "3-tail" configuration and the elimination of the upper bank of windows. An uncommon brochure pre-dating the DC-4s that went directly into military service with the outbreak of WW II. Wikipedia notes: "The Douglas DC-4E was an American experimental airliner that was developed before World War II. The DC-4E never entered production due to being superseded by an entirely new design, the Douglas DC-4/C-54, which proved very successful. Many DC-4E design features found their way into the Japanese Nakajima G5N bomber."
