    Description

The Mandolin Brothers is New York City musical instrument shop.  Located on Staten Island, the business was founded in 1971 by Stan Jay and Harold "Hap" Kuffner.  The name was chosen because of the founders' belief that the mandolin was not receiving its due recognition.  Clients have included Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon, Paul McCartney, and Ricky Skaggs.  At its heyday the business stocked more than 1,000 expensive stringed instruments.  It was the "go to" place for rare instruments.  Kuffner left business in 1982. Jay continued to operate it until his untimely death in October 2014 from lymphoma.   Jay's two adult children kept the business going but a few financial setbacks and a crashed server impelled themk to sell.  It took over a year to find a suitable buyer, a California-based avid collector and seller of fine-stringed instruments.  The brick and mortar Staten Island store was to be closed and the business moved online. Offered for sale:  the Mandolin Bros. Ltd. 30th Anniversary Catalog (2002), Softcover, 82 pp., b/w ills., "then" and "now" pictures of the Kingston Trio on front and back covers.  Mailing label on back cover and broken seal in middle of covers/ otherwise, a very good copy.  October 2001 catalog included.
