Map Itasca State Park Minnesota Showing Lake Itasca - Source of the Mississippi River - Douglas Lodge on Lake Itasca - Historical Data Pertinent to the Park
    Publication:
Virginia, MN. W.A. Fisher Company. Copyright 1939
    Description:
    Antoncich, Frank (mapmaker).
Virginia, MN. W.A. Fisher Company. Copyright 1939.
Color pictographic / pictorial map, 16 3/4 x 21 1/2 inches (including text and illustrations) on sheet size 17 1/4 x 22 inches, folding to 11 x 4 1/2 inches. Blank verso. The map is copyright 1939, but was issued over a period of time, often with the same copyright date but a copyright date of 1956 has also been seen. There may be minor alterations made in the map; for example, in this map state route 92 is marked just to the right of the cartouche; on the 1956 map it is marked to the right of the "HEADWATERS MISSISSIPPI" title. This copy is on a lightly textured paper (as is the 1956 map), but another version has been seen on smooth paper. The pictographs represent historical events, outdoor activities etc. in a comic fashion. Featured several times on the map are text and images relating to Henry Schoolcraft, who explored the region in the 1830s and is credited with identifying Lake Itasca as the true source of the Mississippi River. To the right of the map are color photo illustrations and informational text about the Park. Item #45997
