REVIEW: The editor, Antonia Fraser, has written a number of highly acclaimed books, among them the major historical biographies, “Mary Queen of Scots”, which won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize. Also to her credit are “Cromwell Out Chief of Men”, and “King Charles II”. Her most recent books is “The Gunpowder Plot”, which was a bestseller and won the Crimewriters Non-Fiction Gold Dagger Award. Antonia was the President of the English Centre of International PEN and Chairman of its Writers in Prison Committee. She is now Vice-President of English PEN. Formerly Chairman of the Society of Authors, she is co-trustee with Michael Holroyd of the society’s Author’s Foundation. The author, Neville Williams held the positions of Deputy Keeper of Public Records and Secretary of the British Academy. He is the author of several books on the sixteenth century, including “Elizabeth, Queen of England”.

REVIEW: A vivid and accessible short history of House of Stuart. “The Stuarts” begins with James VI of Scotland, who inherited the crown through his mother, Margaret Tudor, and ends in 1714, with the reign of Queen Anne, whose thirteen children all tragically predeceased her, thus ending the Stuart line. Stunningly illustrated with full-color and black and white photographs and reproductions of art, manuscripts, effigies, coats of arms, and bloodline diagrams. The history of English kings and queens has rarely been as entertaining as in this heavily illustrated series.

REVIEW: This six-volume series covers several centuries of English history, from the Battle of Hastings in 1066 to the death of Princess Diana, the fire that decimated Windsor Castle, and the Queen Mother's 99th birthday in 1999. Each volume offers loads of illustrations, both artworks and photos, as well as informative text. Wonderful introductory material for casual readers, medieval history enthusiasts, and armchair historians.

REVIEW: It's concise, accessible, and has magnificent pictures. The Stuarts is an illustrated introduction to one of the most significant periods in English history, and at its center are vivid biographies of the Stuart kings and queens. Maurice Ashley's text captures the unique characters of the Stuart monarchs and the political, social, religious and economic events of their era. I don't know what professional historians think of it, but it does the job it sets out to do quite admirably. It is altogether a well-written and beautifully-produced series.
